A well-chosen rug helps define a space, bring balance, and create a more comfortable environment. Beyond aesthetics, the right size and placement can completely change how a room is experienced.
Use this guide to find the right proportions for your living, dining and bedroom spaces.
A rug helps anchor the seating area and bring the room together. For a more cohesive feel, choose a rug large enough for at least the front legs of your furniture to sit on. In larger spaces, placing all furniture on the rug creates a more grounded and unified look.
In smaller rooms, leaving a gap between the rug and the walls can help maintain a sense of openness.

Your rug should extend beyond the dining table to allow chairs to move comfortably without catching on the edges. As a general guide, allow enough space so chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out.
For a balanced and restful setting, place a large rug under the bed, extending on each side to create softness underfoot. Alternatively, runners placed along the sides or at the foot of the bed offer a lighter, layered approach.

Runners bring warmth and definition to transitional spaces. Leave a margin on either side to maintain proportion, and consider door clearance when selecting the width.
As a guide, for a 1m wide hallway, a runner between 75–80cm wide often works well.
These guidelines are intended as a starting point. Every space is different, and the most important factor is how the rug feels within your home, in scale, proportion and atmosphere.
